    Hi

I am looking at buying an Astra from a Vauxhall Dealer with NetworkQ.

Having not bought a car for many years, I am out of touch as to whether the
advertised price is what you pay, or are you expect to strike a deal? If
the advertised price is higher with the expectation a buyer will try and get
a discount, what sort of discount is likely on a car around £9,000?

    Any help or tips appreciated.

    Regards

Having not bought a car for many years, I am out of touch as to whether
    the
It all depends how much profit the dealer has in the car.

If you're not PXing your old car you should expect a discount - and don't be
afraid to ask for one, the dealer will be amazed if you don't.

Anything from £500 - £1,000 is possible. But you really need to shop around
to be sure when you're getting a good deal.

i recently purchased a 1.2SXi corsa on a 52 plate, the screen price was
£9500. i was Pxstanging my vectra estate in on it. i was given £1200 over
the book price for the vectra and in the end i paid £8500 for the corsa.
this all in all meant that i was better off by £2200 on the purchasing of
    the car.

it is always best to ask for a higher price on your car than you expect to
get let them bring your price down. also say that you think that the price
of the car that your are looking at is a little higher than you want to pay.
let them try and bring the price down. another tip if you are looking at
finance with them tell them that you can get a better deal at a bank or
tescos or something. if they are interested in your business then they
will do there best to meet you.

do haggle its fun even if you don't get much joy.

    Hi

Thanks all for the advice, I will give it a go and haggle. I am not doing a
trade-in though, just giving them a wad of cash :) I guess that is better
for them as they have cash in the bank without having to sell another car.

Im not too good at haggling and my downfall was that I told the vauxhall
garage how much I had to spend. However I did get £100 off plus 6 months tax
    and a new MOT.

like in cards never reveal your hand too early on in the game, always tell
the garage that you have £500-£1000 less than you actually have to spend.
let them try and bring you up on price, at least youk now that you have a
buffer of £500-£1000. make it look like you will struggle if you have to go
that little bit further, play on the syspathy vote. keep saying that you
can't really afford that but you want the car. if they really want your
business they normally try and strike a deal.
at the end of the day you may have to shell out half of your buffer but you
will feel good as you got the car for less, the garage will feel good due to
making a sale and they think that they got a little more money out of you
    than you could afford.

to show how it can work, i purchased my corsa. it was 3 months old with 1800
miles on the clock. the window price was £9500 (for a £11000 car brand new
due to extras like air con, styling kit etc.). i was trading in my vectra
estate and was offered £5900. i said that was too low for mine and in the
end they offered me £6500 for it. then on the price of the car it said it
was more than i could afford, after a little haggling and saying that we
could not afford the £9500 we finally got it down to £8500. the garage owner
said he would rather sell it to me and get some money in rather than it
sitting on the forcort not bringing anything in. as wellas keeping my custom
as i had previously purchased 4 cars from them.
