The battery light stays on, (on my "R" reg Astra 1.6 Auto), the one on the
dashboard. Even on with the ignition off and the key removed. Any Ideas?

Probably a faulty alternator. You'll need to get it checked by a
    competent person.
If you have access to a multimeter you can check to make sure that the
batery voltage is around 14.5V with the engine running. If not (say its
10.5V to 12.5V) then the alternator is not charging the battery.
Check to make sure that the earth lead to the alternator is OK. There
was also a problem with some of the wires to the alternator chaffing on
the heat shield. I have to move and re-insulate some wires on my ex's
old Astra. I think there might have been a recall on this?????
