    Hi - just replaced my 1990 Escort with a 2000 Astra 1.6 8v.The Escort
was fairly straightforward servicing - plugs, oil/filter and valve
    clearances.
Is the Astra easy enough to service and what do you do?
Looking for a Haynes manual on e-bay ......

    Thanks,

    Trevor

I've got the same engine - rock solid they are. Plugs, oil/air will be the
same as Escort - all electronic ignition plus hydraulic lifters so no valve
    clearances to adjust.

There's also a cabin filter in the passengers footwell to the right behind
the glove box. Change this as they get really dirty.

Also, air con - keep it running or run it regularly - including in winter.
If they are not used then they break down.

These are cool running engines and are prone to mayo in the oil filler
neck - this is normal and not a blown head gasket - just clean it out
regularly - and dont worry about it.

Chris/Opel Parts Greece - thanks for the info and offer of advice. I was
used to plugs and points etc on old cars and wondered if I'd be able
to do a "modern" engine what with all the computerisation. From what you
say it sounds straight forward. Just waiting for my Haynes book of,well
some say lies but I'd say "half thruths"

    Thanks again,

    Trevor

contains all of the usefull tech infos & wiring diagrams to the
''difficult'' problems that you may have!

I have a haynes manual you can have for the postage
cost. It covers Feb 98-Sept 2000,
and both 8v and 16. I have bought an Astra 2.0T (200 bhp) 2 year old, so the
manual is no use to me.
Most important that you change the cam belt every 40,000 miles. If your not
sure, change it anyway. If it breaks, it will cause serious damage to your
    engine.
If you need my e-mail, for this book, let me know, but postage might be
    expensive.
    cheers

8v are non inteference - so a broken cambelt will not damage the engine -
but in the other hand u dont want to breakdown either. the 16v are
    inteference engines.
