Hi, i just bought a new 08 Astra with 1300 miles on the clock. The service
book has no service history in it yet but i wondered when it needs its first
minor service. Its the first car i've owned this young and i know at one
time the first oil change was at a low mileage. Is this still the case and
should i be booking it in at a dealer to keep the warranty valid?

Depends on how you use it of course, but the book should suggest annual
or 10,000 miles. In all fairness that does seem a long time for the
first service, and many experts suggest at least an oil change sooner.
There should be a service indicator in the panel, the odometer should
show "INSP" at switch on when the service is due. Ultimately it depends
on how long you want it to last. In the good old days the first oil
change was to wash out all the running-in metal filings and
manufacturing debris; they make them better now (I hope)

  4. Got a new one last month, the sales droid said they don't do the low
mileage service these days as they use clean tooling and they're 'run
in' at the factory, first one is at twelve months or a set mileage, not
sure what it was, whichever comes first.

My last one was two years before the inspection warning appeared on the
trip display but they've changed it now.

  5. ALL OF THE ENGINES X12XEP and X14XEP can hold 1 year oil or 30000
since they use longlife full synthetic oil and longlife filter
So ...all of the other staff is marketing.....

Vauxhall and a lot of other manufacturers\are still doing it.

Its all down to the fleet market - If the servicing looks cheap over 3
years they'll by an extra few thousand
Its the poor sod down the line that suffers- so an oil change EVERY year and
possiby twice if youre the sort who does a very low mileage doing a mile or
two down the road to the shops
