Im new to this group just thought I would join to see if anyone could help
    me out :)
Basically ive got a few problems with my car, some maybe all one problem but
others might be a seperate one. Anyway i will tell you whats wrong and hope
    you can help me ...

1)First thing i noticed was in the mornings, now + then i hear a tapping
noise coming from the engine, when you rev the engine it gets faster. After
about 30 seconds of driving it disappears. Saying that you can always hear
it faintly which never used to be the case.

    2) What is the normal operating temerature of the engine, mine isnt
operating anywhere near 90c. A few month ago it was overheating so i
replaced both the thermastat and the thermastatic switch. Although it turned
out the thermastat wasnt opening hence the engine getting too hot. Now i
feel it is the other way around the thermastat is opening too soon and the
engine isn't getting warm enough. I can tell this by feeling the hoses that
come from near the thermastat and they are warm when the engine is below
90c. in the manual it states it shouldnt open till 92c.

    3) The cooling system is leaking, i have checked all hoses, they seem ok. I
have been told it could be the head gasket going which will put pressure
into the system, forcing it too leak. I am going to try replacing the
pressure cap as that may be faulty.

My theory was the tapping is caused because the head gasket is going and the
leak is from the pressure it is putting into the cooling system.

Any help or experiences you may of had would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Mark

The noise is most likely coming from the hydraulic lifters, possibly a worn
camshaft. It sounds like your thermostat has gone bad again; I have seen
them fail within a week of being installed. Finally, you need to have your
system pressure tested, and a head disclosing fluid test, which is something
we perform on a regular basis, however we are in Notts...check your yellow
pages, or ask friends for a good engine diagnostics man, who can perform the
    task.
