hi all i have an astra 1.4 which has had a recent full clutch.. hen the old
one came off it was in a bad shape,, literally breaking up...over a couple
of weeks i noticed a grinding noise that disppeared when i dipped the
clutch..i took it back to the garage and he said it was the gearbox(wear and
tear) fair comment if true...he said there was something that could be done
to quiet it down but wouldnt divulge in case he got the work....anyone know
how to quiet a noisy worn gearbox down without putting in a new box..just
running the car now til its demise...regards ..baz

If it wasn't making the noise before the clutch went it probably isn't the
gear box, IIRC the gear box has to come off the change the clutch, perhaps
the got something inside the box through the drive shaft holes when the box
was off. I know my old Rover 820 box died shortly after I had the clutch
changed and I always thought it was something they done..

As for putting something in the box, probably just a tube of MOLY Gearbox
grease, you van get them from Halfords for a couple of pounds.

Although thinking about it it may just be the release bearing, either they
didn't change it when the did the clutch or the new one is failing.
