astra car radio question

Discussion in 'Astra' started by Duncan Newell, Jan 15, 2005.

  1. Hi all

    I have a Vauxhall Astra ( Y reg ) estate, it has a Philips CAR400 tape/radio
in it. Which i have code etc for anyway.

    ( see for pic
    http://www.ascebalo.com/oglasnik/slike/Rubrike/Radio_kazetofoni/Philips/car400.jpg )

I want to take this out and fit a new one i been given that is radio /cd. I
work in electronics so am familar with wire up etc, the question is this i
have unscrewed the 4 small alan key screws that hold it in tried to pull it
out but it wont move at all, is there some thing else im missing does it
have another screw ? or do you have to push it from the back or somehow
disconnect from back before removing ? I dont want to force it ! ive tried
using small presure on sides with a thin screwdriver but it dont seem to
want to move, now is it just a matter of using a bit of force as it stuck or
is there something i am missing ?

Its a good 10 years since i played around with a car stereo in my old car so
    any help be greatful.

Removing the 4 small allen screws gives access to the holes through which
you push either the removal tools (which look a bit like flattened horseshoe
shaped wire coat hangers) or use a couple of smally screwdrivers on each
side at a time to push back a locking plate. If you use the screwdrivers on
one side at a time, just push them in and dislodge by pulling that side of
the stereo out a bit to get it past the locking plate before doing the other
side. If you are careful you won't cause any damage and can pull the stereo
    unit straight out.

The four screws are just grub screws and do'nt hold it in place. You will
have to find a set of stereo pins to remove it.

An alternative is to use small allan keys which you will require 4 off. Push
one in each of the holes, and as it goes in you will fell resistance around
half way down, this is the stereo releasing itself from the cage. Once all
four are done, the stereo will just simply slide out.

Yup - you need the removal tolls - a coupe of bits of bent wire , one for
each side - you push it into the holes, this pushes back a spring clip then
you use the wires as a handle. Buy for a few coppers from Halfords or your
    VX dealer.

Can make out of bent coat-hangers but this approach can be a pain if you've
never seen these things before. Tealeaves do it all the time though.
