Astra 1.7 Dti - idle revs

Hi.

My problem is with my 52 plate Astra 1.7 Dti. Is it normal for the engine to increase it's tickover speed when you are crawling in traffic or coming to a halt ? It happens when I crawl along in 1st gear and then put the clutch in. The revs 'shoot' up to 1500 rpm before coming back down to just under 1000, which I presume is normal tickover.

It does this about 90 % of the time and is so annoying, as well as increasing engine wear and fuel comsumption.

I've been back to my dealer twice only to be told - it's an anti-stall device, and is meant to do it. !! Funny it doesn't do it on my corsa

I noticed this on my 98 Astra when I first had it, I found it annoying also, but aparently its built into the engine management on my Astra and theres nowt I can do about it.

Same thing happens on my Citroen Berlingo 2 Litre HDi.
If I want to crawl along though I have to slowly bring the clutch in and then the E.M.S. adjusts itself. Not like my MK3 Astra TDS where I can just let the clutch in as fast as I like and the car just goes.

Funny you should say that - the 2.0 HDi Picaso hire car we had in Spain this summer was embarasingly easy to stall. My 2.2 DTi Vectra, in comparison, is almost impossible to stall. Manovering slowly while parking is just a matter of letting the engine idle and lifting the clutch. Try that in the Picaso and it would stall.
