Another Corsa Pinking Prob

Discussion in 'Corsa' started by Terry Bartlam, Sep 4, 2003.

  1. Hi

I recently bought a 3 year old Corsa 1.2 16 valve with 30k on the
clock,I noticed a short while after purchase the car was pinking, it
went in for a full service at a vauxhall dealer, who I asked to check the
    pinking problem out.

Following the service the car still pinked and was returned to the
dealer, who pointed out on the later cars adjusting the timing is not an
option, they did check to see that the engine management had the latest
software and seemed to think that a different spark plug would
help, which it has a little but it is still pinking under load around 2/
2.5 thousand rpm, they don't recommend redex as it could cause cat
damage, the mpg seems ok around the mid 40's on local runs, any idea's?

    Please reply to newsgroup, thanks

    Are you using decent fuel?

If you are not already, use Shell/Esso/BP for a couple of tankloads and see
    if that helps.

Fuel quality vary significantly and the premium brands have decent
    detergents in too.

  3. Hi

I had pinking on my P veccy (about 30K)

In the end it was cured by changing the cam belt, lower pulley and gear (I
    think that is correct)

They said "never seen that before"

I don't think these Corsa pinking problems have anything to do with the
spark plug or timing, having owned one myself. I think it's a fuel mixture
problem. This is adjustable, but not without expensive CO2 monitoring
    equipment.

I didn't even know it was adjustable. Surely the main ECU controls it?

The ECU controls it based on the data from various sensors. Like all sensor
output, it needs to be calibrated.
I don't know exactly what they do to adjust it though.

There are no chains at all in the particular model of Corsa I had, and I
    doubt any of them.

    Paul,,

Chain drives the cam shaft ..... maybe a little thinking before
speaking ?? but novel idea gears to drive cam shafts could cut down
maintanance over to VX what you think?
