does anybody know if you can change the voltage regulator on the 1.7 TD
(Isuzu) engine in the Cavalier. Or does anyone have an alternator for sale.
    Cheers

well i can't answer the question for that specific alternator
however, u sound like me, & can fix things...
i've not found one reg module that u can't get at & replace diodes or the
regulator pack itself without too much bother on a bench.
most r easy to get at.
but actually getting the alternator out might be the biggest pig.

The real problem is that the vacum pump for the brakes is part of the
alternator, hence the £170 price tag.
The regulator block *might* be the same as another Issuzo engine but if
I recall the alternator is a pig to strip and a major safty component
'cos of the brake pump. Bear in mind that the bearings also fail on
those so check for play first. Rare as rocking horse poo at the breakers
    too I would have thought.

The alternator is usually an Hitachi LR170-505(B)
I have successfully repaired one from my Astra TDS (Isuzu 1686 engine) by
    replacing the rectifier.
It is a bit awkward to replace, but anyone with a little technical
confidence and good with soldering iron should be able to do it, watch out
    for the vacuum pump though.
www.woodauto.co.uk should get you pointed in the right direction, they won't
supply one to you unless you ahave an account or a dealer but contacting
them may get you a local retailer.
    They go for about £28.
    Good luck.

  5. Most modern alternators are designed as throw away items. Im in the trade
and if someone came to me with this alternator id give it 5 minutes. If it
looks like it will come to bits ill price a rebuild, If it doesn't it go's
in the bin and the customer gets the price for a new one.

Some Modern alternators are contracted in difficult ways and the bolts that
hold the, together are snapped off in the factory.
