On very hot days last year, got a warning light on the dash, and an slightly
hot engine, indicating some sort of cooling problem. I have since noticed
that air con. system is out of action. I was delighted to find that both
share the same fuse, but was then frustrated to find that fuse replacement
did not solve the problem. Is there an obvious place where a wire/plug could
have come loose on a shared circuit? - I don't want my astra garage making
    easy money.

    Thanks - Roy

if its just the air con that is not working now
and you have not used it for a good few months then id suspect it has leaked
    rather than not having power
as the compressor will not turn on without gas
quite cheap to do and fix, if it is the gas.
    shop around

I don't think lack of AC gas (causing AC not working) would cause engine
running hot. I'd check the fans / coolant level, circulation, etc, then get
    the AC fixed
