My 55 plate Astra Sri tailgate switch has become extremely intermittent.
Most of the time it does not release the tailgate but occasionally it
    does work.

I have been told by the dealer that it is probably the micro switch and
it will cost GBP76.00 to replace it. Is this a DIY job and is the
    diagnosis correct?

These are always going - they get water inside and pack up.One day you will
find it had packed up all together - there is an emergency release - put the
back seat down and pull the rubber bung out on inner panel of the tail gate
and the you just need a screw driver.
The switch is an easy DIY repair if you have a bit of knowledge - you need
the back panel off - think it is 4 torx screws and then a big pull. The full
chrome trim needs to come off - 6 x 8mm nuts ( hold it when you take the
last one off ) and the wire needs un plugging. Un clip the wire for the
switch and the swap the switch over. Refit is same as removal - 30 mins at
    most.
    Hope this helps

Sadly, it is just put of warranty and the Dealer was not into discussing
even a reduced cost repair. I am still waiting for a decision from
Vauxhall to replace the tailgate gas struts (they don't work on frosty
mornings) which were reported just before the warranty ran out on
    November.

Anyway, SWMBO is happy so I must be )
