The Mrs brought the car home today complaining that the air con fan
wasn't working. I noticed a burning smell and had a look under the
bonnet. The smell seemed to be coming from the area of the fuses in
the top right hand side of the engine bay. On trying to start the
engine all the lights come on as usual bur nothing happens in the
start position, no starter motor action. I've checked all the fuses
and none have blown. (and the fan runs fine, now!) I suspect an
immobiliser fault. Could anyone tell me-
    a) Can the immobiliser be bypassed?
    b) What lights should be on before start? I've got alternator, exhaust
emission, oil press, electronically controlled engine cooling and
    engine electronics/transmission electronics/immobilizer.
    Thanks.

I think the starter has gone - not unusual - sometimes caused by a slightly
bent ignition key - means that the ignition lock doesn't return to position
2 after starting so inturn keeps the starter motor engaged ( you don't
always hear it). Result is one burnt out starter and one burnt out
electrical part of the ignition switch. Wiring and ring gear usually
    survive which is good..
    Is it out of warranty?

  3. You were exactly right, Mark, and it cost me nearly £400 to get it
    sorted. Poxy car!!!
    Cheers anyway.
