1999 Astra diesel fuel pump

Discussion in 'Astra' started by G9BF Calling!, Mar 2, 2007.

  1. Hi,

My 1999 1.7 Astra diesel estate refused to start yesterday after being used
for an hour and then parked up for about ten minutes. The RAC couldn't
restart it and towed me to the Vauxhall dealer around the corner. The dealer
now tells me the fuel pump is shot and a replacement is £2000 plus labour!
That's more than the car is worth so I've had it towed home. Can anyone
suggest a cheaper option, maybe a specialist fuel pump outfit who would take
the job on? Pretty sure they just did a computer diagnostic and didn't
actually do anything involving tools, so is there a basic check I can do to
    verify what they claim?

    TIA,

    BF

Have you got any fault codes in the ecu?

Pity that. Do you know what engine it is? If it is a Y17DT or DTL the pumps
are normally no problem but there is a common failing on the engine
electrics, really would help if you could get me a fault code. If you paid
them for a diagnostic test they should give you the fault code.

  5. OK, many thanks for that. I'll give them a bell on Monday and ask for it.
Any easy way I can tell the engine type by looking at it?

    Cheers,

  6. Thanks for that! I'll give them a ring on Monday morning and see what they
got. Not sure on the engine type, is there a way to ID it by looking at the
    engine?

    Hello Me140,

I have had the same problem as G9BF. Same year car as well. The fault
code it threw out was 1631. Does that help you help us.

    Thanks in advance

  8. Pump is a common fault with this model, a re-con unit is less than a £1000
    fitted in Birmingham.
