Can anyone tell me why my 1998 1.8 LS Vectra cuts out as if its hit the rev
limiter but at 5000 revs in every gear.

Also it can go a bit crazy now and again, and the revs go up and down when I
    stop, sometimes stall.

The other day it stalled and wouldn't start again for ages.

The worst thing at has done is then I was driving the other week, it decided
to lose power, and no matter how much I fought to keep it going, I ended up
going down the gears until it was limping along as if it was only firing on
a couple. I gave the old girl a rest for a bit, and she was ok again.

    Please help me.

Check for fault codes. Could be a sensor failure.

    Hi
I had an old Cav - last before the Vectra (dear old thing) and in the very
early days it did this type of thing - no codes available when pulled!!
Eventually it manifested itself, after a very long time, as being the fuel
pump relay - changed it twice in 190K miles and hey presto all was well
    again. Still running today!
    Good luck
    RobO.

fuel pump relay or the idle control valve.
well worth doing both even if it does not cure the situation.
both easy, just watch you don't crossthread or overtighten the bolts on the
    ICV or lose/break the washer.

try this one, though diff eng but it shows the parts
i have done several if i can help.

    watch the bolts!
use a std allen key..not a ball socket type.
    watch for the wash (gasket)
if u r carefull it will stay intact.
    watch for creasing it ,
i used a scapel to get it off.

when u put the bolts back, finger tight them (watch out for crossthreading)
then just 'nic' them up with the key 1/4 turn (do not overtighten!!)

the icv itself is easy to do
    WD40 works a treat
use a small stiff brush inside & out.
get rid of all the black gunge.
the 'valve' can be turned with a drive to open the airway, clean that as
    well.

stick it on a 12v power supply , it should rotate around like a wood
    chipper.
if it don't it's not clean yet!
