Can someone explain what the difference between the X18XE and X18XE1 engine
is and how do I tell what I've got please? I'm going to be changing the
crankshaft sensor (see other post) soon and although I think the sensors are
the same I know they are in different places on the two engines.

    Rusted and ropy.
    Dog-eared old copy.
    Vintage and classic,
    or just plain Jurassic:
    all words to describe me.

If you can't read the engine number just ring your local Vauxhall dealer up
and ask for the parts dept. Give them your reg number and they will type it
in the parts epc and tell you. XE engines usually have a metal oil filter
and XE1 a paper element but this is not 100% accurate as I have seen someone
modify a XE1 to take a metal filter.
