I've seen some discussion here about the difficulty of reaching the bulb
(nearside in my case). I can reach it, just, but I cannot extract it.
According to the Haynes manual, you just pull it out, but I cannot seem to
do that. This is possibly due to the fact that you must do something more
than just 'pull'. Since I cannot see the holder, and have never seen one,
and pulling even harder on the wires seems a bit reckless, I wonder if
anyone who has seen the holder could be so kind as to give me a clue,
bearing in mind that I cannot see what I'm doing because my arm is in the
way, and only the tips of my fingers will reach.

Sorry to ask such an elementary question.

They do just pull - there is a little lug on them to keep them from falling
out and it needs a firm pull to get them out. Have you opened the battery
box lid up as it will give you a bit more room? If you want to spend another
5 mins on it you can take the bumper off at that side and unscrew the
    headlight.
