Zafira 53 plate 16 club petrol won't start

odd thing happened today
jumped into the Zaf and tried to start it
all warning lights on dash behave as normal
radio works
remote locking works
the engine turns over but won't start
tried the spare key (just in case); same thing
nothing unusual has happened to it since i last used it the day before
yesterday
the control indicator for immobiliser definately goes out,doesn't flash but
may ake a little longer than usual to go out (not something i usually check
'cos i turn the key and off she goes !!)

any one have any ideas ?

SWMBO's zafira A has failed to start three times in teh last 4 years,
each time the Traction control / ESP light has not gone off after the
ignition is turned on (the car doesn't have TC or ESP!). Left for a
few minutes and all is OK. weird. Can yoiu hear the click of the
solenoid kicking in?

tried again today
after the third attempt it farted a cloud of white smoke and has run
smoothly ever since
